Hotels in Surakarta, Solo, Java

Solo is also known as Surakarta. It is unfortunate that most travelers treat Solo as a mere day trip from Jogjakarta. Solo offers 2 beautiful kratons, rich cultural performances, and an easygoing charm. You will not be harassed by the touts and becak drivers of its touristy neighbor.

Solo was founded in 1745 by Sultan Pakubuwono, the Sultan is said to have been led here by angels. Unfortunately, he died on the day he got to Solo! Pakubuwono X in the early 20th century heralded the golden age of Solo with royal support for arts, dance and architecture.

The Kraton Surakarta owes much of its grandeur to Pakubuwono X who renovated the Solo kraton adding European style decorations to the palace pavilions. The Solo kraton has an excellent museum and pendopo.

Puri Mangkunegaran is home to the second royal house of Solo. The royal family here is obviously wealthier and boasts lovely gardens and a grand museum. The main pavilion’s rounded ceiling is decorated with signs of the Javanese zodiac.

Pasar Klewer is the largest batik market in Indonesia. Sriwedari has nightly cultural shows as do many of the Solo hotels.
